Jerry Wood Biography

I was born on November 24, 1959 and was raised in a Christian home, my parents were pastors and our family loves music. I started playing the piano as a kid and had a few lessons. By the time I was twelve I was playing piano at our little church, My sister Julie and I would switch off playing the piano and organ. I just picked up what ever I could from anyone who would teach me. I was a big fan of André Crouch, Keith Green, and Annie Herring. I wanted to write songs and knew that God had called me into the ministry. In those early years, I remember sitting at the piano at the end of Sunday night services playing the new worship choruses I was learning. That is where I learned to love Worship music and learned how to worship God intimately.
I went to college and majored in music, graduated in 1983 from Drake University with a bachelor’s degree in music education. I married Liliane the year earlier and we were heavily involved in our church where I was assistant music director and the director of children’s music. In the fall of 1984, I started working at Eugene Bible College in Eugene Oregon as the head of the music department. I loved teaching there, I enjoyed the students and was glad to have the opportunity to teach music theory, arranging, conducting, voice and of course ensembles. I spent a lot of time traveling with student groups ministering in churches around the northwest and several parts of the country. During this time, I was writing a few songs but, was always so busy it was difficult to sit down and take the time to write.
In 1985, my daughter Lysha was born and in 1989 Kaliyah was born. Our family was growing and we lived a hectic lifestyle. At the same time, I was attending the University of Oregon working on my Master’s Degree in Conducting. I was glad to finally graduate in 1990.
In 1992, God called us to pastor a small church in San Francisco. California. This was a tremendous time in our lives, and even though were only there a short time God grew us up in many ways. It was here I began writing more songs particularly worship songs.
In January of 1994, we moved to Casper Wyoming and I opened a music studio and by the fall got a job teaching choral music ay CY Junior High School. On the weekends, I traveled and preached in churches and tried out my songs on them. This was also a great time of growth.
In 1995, I was invited by the Open Bible Church in Hardin Montana to become their pastor. I knew God was calling us back into fulltime vocational ministry and the family headed north. This was a fruitful time of ministry and a lot more songs kept coming, not only that our third Daughter Mikah was born in Hardin.
In February of 1998 we went to Rapid City South Dakota, to be on staff as the Worship Arts Pastor at Open Bible Christian Center. I am still ministering here. Our family has grown in two ways, Miyah, daughter number four was born in 2000, and our Daughter Lysha was married in 2006.
God Continues to help me write songs and make them part of our Worship at OBCC.
